How did you first get into photography?
Studied photography straight out of school at the age of 18 but never really enjoyed it as much until I started shooting my own work & style. Starting shooting weddings on film from around 1995 but never went full-time into the business until 2005/2006.
What is the best thing about shooting a wedding in Canberra?
Canberra just has so much to offer within the landscape. We can do empty dirt paddocks, beautiful lakes, super cool city scapes and some amazing architecture as well. Everything is convenient, simple to get to and I just LOVE the people I photograph!!
What was the most outrageous or original wedding you have photographed?
Well they’re all original…..in their own way. I’ve pretty much tried it all…..had brides with their pet snakes wrapped around them, I’ve have witches and broomsticks, crazy fast freight trains coming at us, surprise weddings and I have loved them all!
Where is your favourite wedding photo location in Canberra?
I never have a favourite – I tire of things too quickly and when I start to do that it’s hard to get inspired again. I have no problem with taking risks and trying new things and clients love it. So many people think their wedding photos will become a chore on the day with stiff poses and lots of structure. If you listen to your clients and involve them in the process you will get excellent results.
What is your main piece of advice for couples on their big day (photography related or not)?
Value your photography like nothing else………….choose a wedding photographer you LIKE but one you can trust. Make sure they listen to you and hear your ideas. Ask questions…… no questions are silly questions so ask away, that’s why we are here. Oh, and ALWAYS choose a respected accredited AIPP member (www.aipp.com.au). And make sure you do it your way, take on all the advice you need but just remember it’s your day!
